Ford does use a concept with some similarities to the helix. They do in fact want swirl in the intake charge for faster more complete burn. It is tumble port induction or some such? I had a Ford engine engineer tell me about it. But the design in the intake is a lot more complex than just sticking in a helix which actually reduces air flow into the engine by adding resistance.
You're right. The intake manifold should be designed to "tumble" the air just before entering the intake valve. Turbulence in the upper intake is not wanted though.
Hope you don't mind. I just didn't want anyone to think they would get a kit equal to the K&N FIPK. Actually, your front/rear makes perfect sense if you are standing in front of the truck working on it.
Mileage update as follows:In town, stop and go with a light foot nets 10.72 per gallon. It works for me.Wish i could take a trip to check my highway mileage.Probably have to wait til my Wyoming trip later this year though.
According to a prominent Ford performance guy, running an 'open' air filter under the hood can be detrimental to your performace. A; the air can get WAY too hot, every 10 degrees loses 1% of your HP. And B; the swirling of the air caused by the fan and just air entering the engine compartment can upset the MAF to the point that you'll lose HP and gas mileage. Notice all the racers, the have hood scoops, NACA ducts, etc, etc. It's imperative to get cool air into your engine. If every degrees on increased heat can drop your HP by 1%, it follows that the reverse is true. Sumthin to think about,,, Ken
National Advisory Committe for Aeronautics. It was their theory of 'slow air flow' on a non-direct air flow surface that lead to the shape on the NACA duct. That's why you see them on the sides of cars, instead of directly in the airflow. Ken
