clutches

I am currently rebuilding a 1960 with a 223 and a manual light duty transmission. My question is how do i determine the size of the clutch and does anyone have any suggestions as to where i should start looking for one.

thanks

thanks,chris.
Measure the diameter of the clutch disc. 223 6 cylinder should be 10."

Clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, throwout bearing hub, and pilot bearing. Replace all these parts. NAPA is the best source.

Original Ford Part Numbers

1-B7C-7550-A .. Clutch Disc-10"

1-C5TZ-7563-B .. Pressure Plate-10"

1-B3TZ-7561-A .. T/O Hub

1-C0TZ-7580-B .. T/O Bearing

1-B-7600-A .. Pilot Bearing

Keep greasy mitts off the clutch disc when installing a new one. Otherwise..

You can also check with LMC and NPD. NPD phone is 800-874-7595 and LMC is at www.LMCtruck.com.

I got my new clutch from a local company " Marietta Joint and Clutch".

I took my old clutch to a local truck brake & clutch shop. They did an absolutely super job of remanufacturing it, faced all surfaces, even the adjustable finger bolts, replaced all the internal pivot pins, checked the springs against spec and shimmed as required or replaced, etc. They broke apart the disc and replaced the springs, and used new Raybestos linings.

The good thing about this approach is that you KNOW it will all fit! And it's OEM quality. The bad thing is you can't do a clutch in a day, but you need to get your flywheel surfaced anyway, right? They turned the flywheel an clutch around in 2 days, had all the other parts I needed too, like release bearing, pilot bearing, and pressure plate bolts. The cost was comparable to AutoZone and NAPA. I saw the AutoZone disc, it was made in South Africa, and their pressure plate used a new cover that looked cheap.

I'm also considering this approach. Seems I can find 11" and 12" clutch sets all day, but the 10 1/2" set is rare and elusive. Anyone else had this problem with the 10 1/2" clutch?

It's a 10". I've never heard of a 10.5" clutch on these. Do you have it out? Measure the diameter of the pressure plate, not the disc.

Mine was 10 1/2". The local shop resurfaced my flywheel and got me a new 10 1/2" in about 3 days, including a new pressure plate. I don't remember exactly how much but I don't remember feeling too bad about it. I also had the rebuild and balance my drive shaft at the same time.

Sorry for the bum steer! What years used this? Was it only used with the 6-cyl?

Yes, it's definitely a 10 1/2, and possibly somewhat rare, the only place I found that lists it is NAPA, and it is unavailable. Everyone else carries an 11" and 12" set that looks identicle, but just won't fit. I also have the 1 1/16" spline (10 Teeth), seems all the other kits are 1 3/8" splines. The engine is a 292 with a Ford 3-Speed, and is pretty original from what I can tell. I also had a hell of a time finding trans seals for this truck, so maybe this was a rare combination. NAPA sends clutches out for rebuilding, so that's an option if I am unable to find a place that does it locally. Good Times,
\-Paul

1-1/16" sounds like a car tranny. Anyway, the rebuild-your-own-unit option has always worked for me. The cost at the shop I go to was:

Surface flywheel $18.50
Reman pressure plate $65
Reman disc $55
Throwout bearing $35
Pilot bearing (ball) $7

Total $180

AutoZone and NAPA were within $20-30 of that.
