So far the only filter wrench I have found that is big enough for the filter on these trucks is one like this that I got from the Schucks/Checker/Kragen chain

Naaa, just some steel strap and a vise grip is all you need, one size fits all .

Sweet! Know where I can get one?

That's the type I wanted when I bought the strap wrench - none of the parts stores in my area carry one that opens more than 3-7/8" - which is about 3/8" too small.....

I use a chain style strap wrench. It works, but it's kinda awkward. Keep in mind that the fuel filter is big too (at least on a 91).

If you're really cheap, you could always just drive a phillips screw driver into the filter with a hammer like my dad taught us

Most big truck parts stores have a selection of larger filter wrenches.

A neat little tool I saw once was one that fit on the end of a socket wrench and could clamp on the end of the filter. With a breaker bar, you could have your way with a stubborn filter that will not give. Also a little less awkward to use if you have 4wd, since an extention could be used.

I have one of those. You need to be careful since they don't slip. I had one spin at the crimp on me. Another one just tore in half.
