Filter Wrench

I have not been able to find an oil filter wrench that last longer than the filter does. I've tried the cup styles (they break) and the strap styles (hard to get on sometimes). I need something that fits multiple sizes up to the Ford FL-1995 for my Super Duty Diesel. Has anybody tried this ratcheting type and is it large enough to fit the Fl-1995?

Thanks,

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Aug-02 AT 01:43 PM (EST)]I too had been unhappy with the cup style, but I bought one for my new F150 because it looked like it would go easier that way. I got a sharply formed one at Murray's that fits tightly into the Motorcraft oil filter's notches. It does not work with most other brands which have a kind of polygon end.

It works for me; maybe you'll like it.

MrBSS

PS: It does, of course, require a different cup for different diameter filters.

What I ended up getting was a band style wrench that has a joint in the handle, and has rubber bonded to the inside of the band, it really works well, and with out any slipage. Believe it or not I got it at Walmart for about 5 bucks, 5 years ago.

I've been using a racheting one I got from eastwood for almost 10 years now. The best tool I ever purchased. Not sure if it will fit that particular filter, but the one I have does fit the stock filter on my 2002 F-250 psd. When I used to work on vehicles to make ends meet, I ran into some filters that were original equipment on cars 7-8 years later, never changed, almost welded on. Couldn't get a strap filter to work for a darn and near impossible to fit in some places. I was getting used to using the ole screwdriver thru the side trick. Just my 2 cents.

I usually just take a 12 inch screwdriver and jam it thru the
filter and then twist off

Don't know about the ratchet type but I like the wrench sold by Girot's garage. You can find them on the web. They sell a big slip joint type pliers that works really well for me. It fits small to fairly large filters. the only gotcha is that the handles do require some room so you can access and twist the filter. They are very sturdy, I actually use them for other things that I shouldn't.

Good Luck,

Ooops, that's Griot's Garage, need to learn to spell or type. Here's their web page. Not sure if they still sell them. It is easier to look in their paper catalog. They are not a cheap place to buy tools though. I think the pliers cost me about $25 8 years ago.
