Ive contacted the company regarding a prefilter for my truck. They havent come up with a model yet for the K&N flat drop-in filter. Does anyone here own a outwears prefilter? It sounds like they are made from Goretex or similar material. Anyone care to comment? I "rearranged" the stock airbox in my F150 and I'm running the filter exposed, the only negative I forsee is possible moisture getting to it. Truck runs great with the extra airflow!
In my experience it's generally okay to run an open element filter unless you plan on forging deep water or something crazy like that. My brother and I (along with countless other trucks that I have seen) have been using open element filters for years without problem...
Dyno runs have shown that fan wash will affect MAF meter performance however, causing assorted drivability problems, bad performance and higher fuel consumption. There's no doubt a bigger filter helps airflow, but it should be shielded from the fan and ducted to pull air from outside the engine bay.

Interesting... So I'm assuming that fan wash is when the fan forces air through the filter that the engine did not require? I was planning on eventually building a custom box like Mike (Mr. M), maybe I'll do it sooner than later.
Interesting...all I need now is a dyno to test my design vs the original stock box. All I know is my truck has woken up in second and third gear noticeably. Im one of the lucky few who doesnt look at fuel mileage, my daily drive to work is only 5 miles. I havent done the battery reset of the computer yet, wondering if I should since its been running fine.
What was the top of the airbox is now the bottom. You have to remove the throttle intake hoses and flip the box 180. I took the cold air intake and positioned it so it now flows over the filter to keep it from sucking engine heat. Its a redneck design but my truck is loving it, all it cost me was the price of the K&N drop in. You can try this without cutting anything to test run it first on your rig. I ran it for a week with the paper filter and felt a difference on pickup, so I spent the money on a K&N and keeping it this way.
