Rear Seal

How hard is it to replace the rear main seal on a 400?
Can it be done without pulling the motor?

I did it on a leaking 2 piece seal for my 400 in my '53 and it was a tight squeeze. You have to drop the pan and loosen the main bearing caps to do this. It's all on your back, and can get old pretty quick. If it is in a 4x4, it would be alot easier. If you do it with the engine in the truck, get a manual or look on Autozone's website for directions/tips on how to do this. This will come in handy if you have to remove a stock rope seal and how much to loosen the main caps, etc. If you do it with the engine in the truck, you will need to use the 2-piece style seal. Nothing wrong with them, I'm using a set made by Fel-Pro. Maybe this link will work for directions on Autozone's website:

Thanks for the info. Mine is a 4x4 so it won't be too bad. Its a brand new motor but the dang seal is leaking. Guess I'll just have to get it done!

If it's a new engine, it could be that your rings aren't seated yet and you're building up crankcase pressure in your oil pan and it is blowing out your rear main.
