what are these parts in my engine

i noticed them while swapping out my alternator a couple weeks ago. auto zone guy guessed they were aftermarket.

i'd say they're seperate components, but they way they're mounted they appear to have a similar function too. anyway, part 1 and part 2 are as follows:

part 1 starts at this open end (just above part 2)


and goes out to the hose my finger is touching:


part 2 starts with some openening here. not in front of grille or anything with tons of airflow


it comes into this cylinder here


and goes back out to the middle of the engine compartment with 2 hoses here: one goes just below the alternator


SO...
they seem to be very "open ended". what are these? are they related? are they supposed to be capped or filtered? i'm sure i'll have more questions if someone can get me this far. nothing's wrong, just curious

1 is a dump Silencer
2 is a Silencer/Filter

so both of them being wide open ends doesn't matter? they just looked more important than "silencers". especially since the front part of #2 falls off quite often

googling around for what a dump silencer was, one of the top results sent me right back here....just a month ago.

how could i forget? i remember the poop jokes and everything. even made the same ones in my head when i heard what it was today.

Why doesnt my engine has these things? its a 1990 5.8
