Me new 07 f350 just got her first leak, after 1600 miles. The trans filter leaks.I snugged it up a little bit more but hard to say if it did anything the leak is so minor.Whats involved here just change the o-ring?I checked all the lines and it appears it the filter housing.Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks Rob
It's just an o-ring--nothing special. I don't even know if that filter comes with a new o-ring in the box like the fuel and oil filters do and I've changed it a couple of times. You shouldn't have any major concerns unless it keeps leaking then take it in and make the dealership do it under warranty--at least get it documented.
Hey thanks for the quick reply.I appreciate it.After snugging it up a bit and a test ride it leaks worse still not major. So i assume it's the o-ring.Does anyone know if the filter comes with the o-ring,where should i buy a filter and o-ring.More importantly how much oil will i lose while replacing the filter??I'd really hate to bring it to the dealer for something simple as i'm pretty busy and really do'nt want to lay up the truck.
The filter does NOT come with the o-ring. You have to ask for this separately at the dealership. I suppose if you took the old o-ring to any hardware store you could get an acceptable replacement as well. They are pretty cheap at the dealership. I bought one just to have as a spare in the truck. I will re-use my original one until it leaks.
Also - it is a good idea to pre-lube the o-ring before re-installing the housing.
Also - I use maybe 1/4 of a quart to re-fill the housing before I put the new filter in. Let it soak in and then screw it on. Make sure the bottom plate (it has a spring under it) is firmly inserted into the center tube of the filter before screwing on the housing.
Dealer here wants $7.95 for O ring. Platinum coated you know, LOL. It does not come with the filter. Let them take care of it in case you have a warped canister or something wrong with the housing. If you over torque it, you own it.
$17.99 w/ the o-ring is a pretty good deal. The dealership charges $34.73 for the filter alone (way too much). They charged me $5.74 for the o-ring (was just too convenient to go looking for the cheapest price).
O'Reily's wants $15.99 for the filter and I do not know if the o-ring comes w/ it. dieselfiltersonline.com charges $16.95 - again not sure if it is w/ the o-ring or not. dieselfiltersonline gives a 5% discount after $250 and free shipping after $150 (and no tax if out-of-state). Unless you get the specials at pep boys for oil filters, dieselfiltersonline is hard to beat for bulk orders of oil filters, air filters and the external transmission filter (a couple of friends and I go in for bulk orders every so often). IH dealer (Santex in San Antonio) will sell fuel filter sets for $30.69 plus shipping.
The Motorcraft O'Riellys price doesn't include a gasket, and here it is $19.95. They sell the Wix at the same price so looks like that might be a better deal if it comes w/ the O ring as mentioned before. Haven't bought a Wix one yet as O'Riellys here doesn't stock it so it is a same day order. , maybe nextime
The Motorcraft FT145 external transmission filter doesn't come with the o-ring. The filter is made by NTZ and we are stocking the NTZ filter which comes with an o-ring and we sell it for $12.49.
