The chassis is almost done. Its boxed all the way thru, and has a Series II JAG IFS setup. The rear spring hangers have been lengthened and softer springs in. The chassis has been lowered about 5 in. all around. Diff is a 9 in. out of a 59 Tank Fairlane. Only thing to go is the engine mounts. I am leaning towards a chev 350 for it is a flexible, reliable unit, that revs harder and pulls better, but anything is possible. Whaddayareckon?
Picture this: It is a bright, beautiful, Saturday afternoon at the show'n'shine. All the hoods are up and open on row after row of beautiful rods, both cars and trucks, all individual expressions of their builder's personal dreams, hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance...and the majority of them have the same engine, a small block Che*y. Some individual vision, that.
Dude, take the high road,do a late Cobra 4-cam SVT motor, or build an Ardun, a 390, a 351C...these engines may be more of a challenge to build than a mouse, but then if you weren't up to it you wouldn't be building your own vehicle, now would you?
Thanks for your advice boys. My original preference was for a 390. The limiting factor is my location, Australia. 351s are around (lots) but I dont rate them. 390s are here to, but they cost big bucks. Importing is an option, I have time on my hands. Any of you guys recommend web sites that quote prices for motors in the States? Even better yet, send me a message with some ca$h fighures. The late model 5litre option is attractive, but the local 5litre engine is a bit of a dog.
Time on your hands, eh? Surf through www.roadsters.com and all associated links, then www.hemmings.com. I have yet to find a web address for Dove Engineering, a company who reproduces FE parts and pieces, in iron and aluminum, but as soon as I do I'll sic you on 'em! I'll also make some calls to engine rebuilders in the area, garden-variety 2-bbl. 390 long-block cores shouldn't be all that costly, and Houston, Texas, where I live, is a port city so export should be easily arranged. A Che*y indeed; repent, blasphemer!
