Gents,
What's the easiest way to tell a 351W from a 302 when installed in an '87 F150? Got a mystery truck that I picked up and the kid who owned it said it was a 351, but it sure looks like a 302 to me. Doesn't make a difference to me, just trying to clear it up.Thanks,

well in 87 the 302 would be efi first. while the 351w would be carbed. also another way to tell is down by the distributor on a 351w the base sits below the intake vs flush with the intake.
what shape are the runners on the upper intake. a 302 has square looking runners while the 5.8 has round runners. 351w became efi in 88 but any efi 5.8 could be swapped into a previous efi 5.0 equipped bronco/truck. does the egr tube come from the passenger side manifold up to the upper intake/throttlebody area or does the egr tube come from under the upper intake then up to the throttlebody area??

^ not all of them were. The earlier EFI 302 and 351 both had Ford Electronic Fuel Injection cast into them instead of the engine size. The later models had either 5.0 or 5.8 cast in.

A couple more numbers to help differentiate the motors..
Intake width is 9" on the 5.0, about 12" on the 5.8.
Deck height is 8.2" on the 5.0, 9.5" on the 5.8.
easiest way to tell is to look where the dizzy clamp is, if the block deck that it (the dizzy clamp bolt) threads into is flush with the bottom of the intake then its a 302 like kemicalburns said. On a 351w theres a definate difference in elevation between the two..something like 1.25"
OK, the egr comes from under the upper intake, up to the throttle body, and yes
it does have the plain "Ford Electronic Fuel Injection" casted on it. The dizzy does look to be elevated from what I can see...so 351W after all?
