I have a Westin Sportsman KD Grill Guard on my F350 CC LB. Recently I was in Texas (where they seem to take their trucks much more seriously than here in Washington). Many of the grill guards there had a lathe-type screen welded to them to prevent rocks and stuff from getting into the radiator area. They looked like they were part of the guard but I haven't found any like that online or in stores. Mine came disassembled and there would have been no way for the screen to be attached. Are there any that are made that way or do you have to go to someplace and have it done to an existing installation? The screen material is flat and not the canted mesh found on regular lathe material. It really looks like a good idea and I'm surprised not to have ever seen it up here in the Pacific NW.
Edit: My son (in San Antonio) just told me that Go Industries Rancher Grille Guard makes a grill guard with the mesh insert. Wish I had known. I looks like a worthwhile feature.
RANCH HANDS!!! These things are insanly popular out here in West Texas. Sched. 40 pipe and steel plates, custom punch screens, hidden reicievers on the front. Really, Ranch Hand is the way to go. Friend of mine in a Tarus got hit my a Dodge going 40 with one. Tore open the Tarus like an empty beer can, and all the guy had to do was wipe off his front end and write a check to cover the damage he did to my friend's car. They make full replacement front ends, guards, bumpers, hitches, headache racks, and just about everything black and steel. When I have a few more grand to put into the truck (aestetics wise), I'm going to stat with the front end, and eventually get a rack/rails set to go under my toolbox.
That Ranch Hand stuff looks really good. So does the GO Industries grille. Too bad I had already bought and installed the Westin. I was hoping I could get a screen to weld on like the ones on the grilles mentioned above. The window screen idea doesn't sound like a viable option. The screen material is very flimsy and the mesh is too small and restricts air flow. Thanks guys, that was good info.
A simple grill insert will help catch the big stuff and deflect or slow smaller stuff, if your worried about your radiator. Thats what I did before I got a bumper replacement.
In the past I had Jeep Wranglers and used a bra all the time, because road debri would eat up the radiators. The bra had a mesh screen.
I have the frontier front and rear replacements and love them, they flow with the truck great and the rear bumper actually had the spots for the rear back up sensors already in place, check them out http://www.frontier-gear.com/index.html
