I used to own an '04 diesel, and loved it so...but sold it due to financial reasons...Ive been serching lately for another Ford diesel, and I was kinda lening towards the 7.3, hoping I could find one thats not too expenive. Yesterday while I was on the hunt on the net, I came across an '04 F250 cc sb 4x4 Lariet, 6.0 with 160k miles. Firm asking price is $17.5 I have not personally seen it, but the owner assures me it is in good condition. The location is about 2 hrs from me, and the owner said he would meet me in the middle. Is this truck worth this price, and taking a chance, sight unseen?? Obviously when I see it, if its torn up I would not take it...carfax is clean. Id apprecite your inputs on this. 3 years and 160k should mean any bugs are cleaned out, but what issues come into play with this mileage??? TIA
160000 on an 04 means that truck has seen a lot of action. But a properly maintained truck that's only three years old should be OK.
Ask him if he has the maintenance records, or slips for purchases if he did his own maintenance.
Unless he really needs the truck for every day work and such, he should have no problem, so long as the mechanic isn't some hack who will start pulling things apart.
After that see what the mechanic says and go from there..
***I just edited this post-- go to kbb.com and enter the particulars for this truck.
Just for kicks I looked up a truck as described. I don't know your location so I entered the zip for Los Angeles (has a great deal of effect on the price.. Beverly Hills vs Bear's Butt CA in the middle of nowhere) -- That mileage and standard Lariat package showed had low private sale of mid 18k with a highball private sale value of 21k.
Input more specific info and it'll boil the numbers down to what applies to this truck.
Gut feeling is 17.5k is about right. But that depends on the condition and even cosmetic items have effect on the price.***
Might want to ask - Was this a tow vehicle, work vehicle? What is the tread depth on all tires. Can he email pics of all 4 sides + inside of box and cab.
pic will be available monday...codition wise, was told 8 out of 10. I would assume it was a a tow vehicle considering age and mileage. Would that be a good thing or bad thing if it was a tow vehicle with those miles??
The main reason now why im considering this truck is because when I search for vehicles, Im coming up with alot of 99 to 02 with similar milege, and asking about the same in price, nothing much lower than $16k, and thata a 99 that looks like its been worked on a ranch..according to the pictures. Very few Lariets, mostly xlt
If it is a tow vehicle. It has seen a lot of miles but shouldn't hurt. I would hope they have maint. records. I would see if oil was changed at 5K or so intervals. Tranny filter changed regulary, tranny flushed. If it is like mine listed , it should have had a tranny recall done around 04 /2005. Oasis should show this.
If you decide to get it. Plan on getting all fluids and filters changed. This way you know for sure where you are on maint.
160K is not alot of miles for todays trucks, especially Diesels.
I think that a good price for the truck if its in good condition.
The extra 5-10K you save could be used on your wish list.
Studs, egr delete, tunes, exhaust and guages,
making your superduty more reliable and fun than stock.
75% of the problems with 6.0 seem to be headgaskets, egr, or egr cooler.
I have not seen a 99 up superduty wore out, I have seen ragged out or wrecked. When I was in the market with a small truck budget, I saw many trucks over 200K and some over 300K miles than ran and drove nice.
$10-12K seems to be the floor on CC 'diesel' superduty with auto reguardless of condition.
P.S. On the test drive stomp the old girl to see if she pukes.
the truck just sold to someone else, thanx for all the replies and help...let me ask you guys this question...what would be a better value..an older truck with low miles, or a newer truck, withhigh miles??
Do not buy a truck (especially 03 - early 05 6.0's) without an Oasis. I have several VINs posted now and have probably run 15 others already. So far I haven't seen anything I can afford and good Oasis. There is one here in Memphis that the dealer is asking $19,000 or so, but the maintenance report was a mile long. Someone dumped it to get rid of it and this lot picked it up at auction. 7.3's in my area are still close to $20k with up to 200k miles. And most are holding firm! There is a 2000 7.3 at work with 206K miles and he only wants $11,500, but it is only a Supercab. There are a lot of those in Memphis for sale.
