Hello I wat to put a 400M in a 1970 mustang.
I live in Argentina and the others V8 that I have found are to expensive ( 2500 US) or have bad cores (bad crank, block or rod).
In argentina is very difficult to find American V8
I found this 78 400 fully loaded ( air ,steering pup etc) that have 50.000 miles on it for 1300 US dolars.
The setup will go like this:
Carburetor: Road Demon 625CFM vacuum secondary (300US)
Intake : Offenhauser dual port (252US)
Cam : Rhoads cam kit 220 @.050 and Rhoads variable duration Lifters (169Us)
Pistons: dynagear 9.0:1 (128US)or 351c modified 10:1 (around 300US)
Heads: stock ported (by me)
Headers:thorley 4 into 1 for a 400M in a 70 mustang (around 200US-300US)
The problem are the motor mounts and the bolt patern of the trans.
I have a small block toploader , I think that it could fit whit some minor mortifications (help in this section please).
The motor mouns have 3 pieces in almost all ford v8 engines:
motor pad (unique in 351M/400)
motor mount
and the frame mount
I have the chasis mount on my car , the engine have the pad , so I must MAKE the motor mount I think.
Can I put 351C motor pads on the 400?
That will do the thing much simple.
The pad that rest on the engine is the only one that absorb vibration? , if so can I make the motor mounts from steel only
(no rubber)?
Finally :
I want 380/400 hp and 400lb of torque.
It could be done whit a 305 but it would cost a lot more.
It could be done whit a 351C/W yes but I do not find this engines very often and cost a lot more.
THANKS

It just inst possible. A whole new tranny is going to be a order. As for how it will go with the motor mounts i have no clue
How about using the tranny from the truck?
Also, the motor mounts are going to need to have some flex, ability to move, not just absorb vibration. As the RPM's get higher the engine will turn slightly.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
I've heard tales of a '70 Mach 1, Q-code with a 429, but I've never seen one. As for the motor mounts, I'm not sure.

dhrf- the engine mounts you will have to make, the 400 uses a different style mount than the 351C&W. your small block trans will be fine, all of the top loaders have the same front pattern. You will need to find a 4 spd bell from a 351/400M or 429/460, one from a truck might be easier to find. If you can't find one Lakewood sells new ones. Headers should work if you get them for a 351C. Keep in mind the taller deck of your engine will not leave much room between the spring towers for plug changes. What you are planning is doable, but is not easy. Here where we have more engine availablity most of us would try something else. Can you find any other engines? how about a 390? ford made thousands of these and they were offered from the factory in '70 'stangs, unlike the 400M. Let us know how you are doing. DF
