Engine Dies

About 2 months ago while coming home, I slowed to turn onto my road and all of a sudden the engine died. I re started it right up it ran fine till I pulled in my drive. Once again it died. This time when I restarted, it surged very bad for about 15 seconds, the check engine light came on, and it had very little power. I made it to the house and it died again. No restart. The next morning it restarted and ran as if nothing was wrong. Check engine was off and it ran perfect. I took it to Auto Zone the guy brought the code reader and checked to see which code it left. NONE!!!!! Well I don't know what to do. It has been 2 months and it runs perfect. Today I am going to the airport and driving 60 mph the engine dies like you turned off the switch. I put it neutral and hit the starter and while it turns over, it won't start. I pull over, cut off the ign. switch and restart it fires right up, runs about 10 seconds and dies again. I again turn it off, let it sit then restart and it starts right up and runs fine. No check engine light and no codes. I went back home and had to take my wifes Dodge, I'll never hear the end of that, and it ran fine all the way home about 15 miles at 70 mph. What in the world do I need to look for????

2000 PSD auto

Thanks Bill

Most common culprit is the CPS (cam position sensor). It sits on the front of the engine just above and to the passenger's side of the crank pulley. Only one 10mm bolt holds it in.

I took it to Auto Zone the guy brought the code reader and checked to see which code it left. NONE!!!!!
Those code scanners cannot retrieve DTC's from our trucks. The Powerstrokes use a Ford specific group of OBD-II codes, and they are not the generic ones. Most scanners only read the generic codes. You have to get a scanner that is compatible with our trucks. Personally I use Autoenginuity.

The CPS=Cam Position Sensor and UVC=Under Valve cover Connector are two possible problems that should be investigated. Searching on these will provide plenty of info on each. I'd try a CPS first since that's easy and cheaper than pulling the valve covers. It could also be any number of connectors, PCM, IDM, etc...

CPS is pretty easy, huh Bill? Just about the most common culprit on the 7.3, but thankfully cheap (now) and not too tough. I'd really recommend buying another one and keeping it as a spare, because it is possible to go through several of these things. Some guys have gone through three or four, others none. You just never know, but it's nice to have a backup so you're not stranded. Cheap insurance.
