I honked up the spelling on the 1st post! Tried to Edit, but it wouldnt take, so here is a repeat!
I want to purchase a code scanner/reader, one that list the code and the problem and clears it. The OBD II types dont work on Ford Diesel's, or at least not mine, As I understand it! I want a stand alone set up, what do you guys have or have used and recomend!
Thanks
Rich
you are correct a standard OBDII scaner will not work on a PSD. for just a stand alone unit (not AE which requires a laptop) the are pricey, i dont know the exact model but snap-on makes some (model 2500 comes to mind) i think they are in the $500.00-$600.00 range

Thats about what I figured, CRAP! So I guess its AE!
Not the only choice. My Bully Dog Programmer will read and clear codes, Mine is for sale..., or you can look on fleabay and pick up one for around $350. It will not data log or live monitor but it will read and clear codes. I think some of the other plug in downloaders do the same, Super chips, diablo, etc...

thats a good point i forgot about that..in fact i almost bought one off E-bay just to read codes. i think a used one can be had for alot less than $350.00.
The laptop is part of the problem, I have one, or should I say I bought one for my son who uses alot (stay's on it).
Sure I could use whenever I needed to, After looking at OBD II scanners/readers and how reasonable they were I thought that would be the best way to go, Stand alone system, nice units! But as I found out they dont work on diesels or vehicles over a GVRW of 8500lbs. Now I am re-considering the A.E. Do our trucks store thrown codes forever! Is there a limit and they start dumping the codes? Or do they only throw a code when the SES light comes on? These are only a few of the questions I have about the computers in these trucks!
Thanks
Rich
Dad - don't know what the PCM memory can hold or how long. The unit will store many codes that you would not be aware of unless you hooked up to it. Only certain codes will trip the SES light.
BD - I used the 3" marine exhaust hose - no steel in them. I installed them on the Y pipe (4 locations). I used commercial boots on the intercooler since the ends are different diameters. The marine tubing is extremely thick and looks like it will last forever.
Being that I have done so many mods now, and drive like a mad man, especially since the new tuner, Should I go get someone to clear what codes are there? Is it hurting anything, should I only worry about it if the SES light comes on and stays on? I guess the best thing is to go ahead and get the A.E program!
Another thing you might consider: With the AE you can read and clear codes for any vehicle. You will want to purchase the extended capabilities for Fords, but it will still connect, read and clear any make with OBDII.
