1989 F150 4.9l

Good Morning,
My truck has been just dying lately. It will be running great then it will sputter a few times and just die. Sometimes it will start back up right away, other times I will have to wait an hour or so. I cleared the memory and kept running the truck until it finally died. The one code that came up is a CM code # 14. The code definition is "Two or more successive erratic Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) pulses occurred, resulting in a possible engine miss or stall". I am not quite sure what that code definition means. Can anyone help ?
Thanks

That's a common failure. The pickup coil needs to be replaced. Problem is you need to pull the distributor. The distributor gear needs to be pressed off along with the distributor shaft.

Easier to install a rebuilt distributor from Auto Zone, Napa, Parts America etc...

If you go the rebuilt route, make sure you transfer any parts needed from your old distributor to the new one before you turn your old distributor in for the core/exchange. I believe one of the parts is the octane rod.

Thanks, I really appreciate the answer. I will probably go with the rebuilt distributor.
