So I posted about this a while back and cannot find the thread. I had about 500 miles of hot desert driving without issue, multiple tanks of fuel without issue. Stopped and filled up again, this time a friend added some RBP diesel fuel additive (doubt this caused the prob but worth mentioning) drove 20 miles no problem, stopped for an hour or two then drove another 20 miles at highway speed. Stopped at a light and taking off it started sputtering and puffing small amounts of smoke almost like it was dropping cylinders.. I was able to "pedal" my way out of it and it was running kind of weird for the next couple miles after that then cleared up, drove about 30 miles without issue, fast forward a few hundred miles and a few weeks trouble-free... I was warming it up after work, holding the engine at about 800rpm and it just died, sounded like a carb backfire almost - nothing big but definitely just shutoff. Fired right back up and drove it home no problem. No check engine light either time, I scanned it just for the hell of it but no codes... Need help speculating
push the shrader valve in at the filter head and see if you have any fuel pressure. what year 7.3 PSD? early had mechanical lift pump later had electric in tank

I know I've got pressure because it's running great aside from the two spells it had. It's an '01 E350
Don't assume you have fuel pressure just because it runs good....I installed a fuel pressure gauge and it is a tell all...my fuel pump was was on its way out and the gauge showed me the pressure drop when under load...the same when I picked up some dirt and the filter was plugging.....and you don't want low pressure...ever...in the Powerstroke because you will ruin the injectors real fast...I then upgraded the fuel return spring...I run 80 psi at idle and ***** to the wall the pressure does not go below 60 psi. For fuel mileage I have been using the gauge like a gasser uses a vacuum gauge.
Also the in tank fuel screen assembly may be coming apart, that will cause a plugged inlet on occasion, thereby dropping the fuel flow and pressure. I went through this with my 99 SD F250 a couple years ago. Ended up dropping the tank and pulling the assembly out, putting a brass "T" on the inlet tube shrouded by plastic window screen. I then added a water separator/spin filter on the frame to pre filter the fuel before it gets to the filter on the engine.
