Excuse me for being a greenhorn, but when did they start putting the 460 in F150's?

Were most C-6's? Could the newer Ford or aftermarket heads, manifold, etc.,be used on these older blocks? Were they all 2 bolt main? I would like to build up a short bed on the cheap for mostly drag duty.
Any insight would be appreciated!

Ford never installed a 460 in a half ton production vehicle. Maybe for a promotion or for their SVO department, but not for the general public. The 460 was only installed in the F-250 & up and in the Econoline vans E-250 & up. I hope this helps.

Ford DID put the big block 460 in 1/2 T production F-150s, positively in 77-79, maybe earlier. I have seen at least a half dozen, and all were backed by the C-6. Most were loaded XLT Ranger Lariats by the way. A high school girlfriend's dad had one and I liked that pickup more than I liked the girl... Had 3.50 gears and would spin the tires until you let off the gas! Cruised at 85-90 as smooth as a Town Car- nice truck. Probably rare, but if you look around at mid to late 70s F-150s (Tow package/camper specials might be a good place to start), you will probably find one.

You might just be right 4byFord, I was thinking of the F-100. Sorry for the mis-information!

I guarantee you that those 78-79 F150's had swapped in 460's. As far as I have ever heard the 400M was the biggest motor in those year trucks.

Honestly, guys, this was factory. I checked the brochure for 79 and the option is there. Also called a friend whose dad had a 79 F-150 Super Cab Trailer Special, and confirmed that it did have a 460. They were only available in 2WD though. The 460 was put in the F-350 4WD in 79, according to some sources, but I have never seen one...

460's were put in half ton 2wd truck since at least '75 since I own one. This particular truck was ordered special, but that was only so it would have cruise control, the engine was a standard option. I've owned two of these. The first was a 77 and I sold it. This one now is a 75 and it's be my project. I looked up the codes on it and they said it is a 460 engine, auto tranny (wasn't specified but it is a C6) and a 3.25 LS rear end. Any questions???

Thanks for the verification bigsnag, in the face of such skepticism, I was starting to question my memory!
