Hey guys, this is my first post. I'm a new 7.3 owner with alot of questions. My first is which chip is everyone running & why? What are the benefits/negatives of some of the current performance chips offered? Which is the most widely used? Thanks a bunch. By the way, I'm Chad.
Hi Chad, nice to see another face. Seems like the Dp-tuner is the most raved about and for good reason. They are on the left of the page under site sponsors, check them out. There will be a ton of responses on this because they are highly regarded in this forum, and the country for that matter. What a bit and see what everyone has to say.
They all work well, it all depends on what you want. The first and most important step is to be able to monitor your EGT, if nothing else GET a gauge to monitor EGT before you start adding H.P!! Some come with all in one digital display that monitors Boost, EGT, Temps and a host of other things to choose from. Alot of tuners prefer to have individual guages to monitor there choice of paramaters. You can get a single chip, a multiple flip chip or have your ECM flashed for a specific tune. For FORD truck's D.P tunning is your best choice (in my opinion, and I have had Banks and superchip), They specialize if FORD's, The best adivice is read this and other forums, ask questions and decide for yourself!
Hope this helps.
Rich
Do a search on this topic and see what you find. By far DP is the favorite around here. I would have to agree with Dad and many others and go with a way to monitor at the very least EGT. There are several tuners that you can get that will act as a guage set as well and in particular the Edge Evo II will do it without having to buy a seperate set of guages. That being said, DP can put their own tunes on the Edge Evo II if you would like as they are Edge dealers. It all comes down to preference. Look at my signature to see which way I went.
Welcome Chad. What Rich and the others have said holds true. I too have had and tried SC,Banks, & Edge. I run a DI 6-pos chip now. Alot of the guys here swear by the DP tuner. I think you will find it cheaper to go with the the seperate gaugee and tuner type set up. More power too..Country

I run a six position Diesel Innovations tuner. They are based in Houston and they specialize in Fords too, just like DP. Awesome product and the best customer service on the planet and really cool guys to boot.
Heed the advice of the others and do gauges before you chip your truck. You'll know why when you see those EGTs flying up to red line.
I run a TS 6 way and love the way it shifts and the power, if i had a concern...My EGT's
can hit 1100 to 1200 quick...I have had to let off before so not to exceed 1300.
I don't know if that is the TS chip or just my truck
dp tuner buddy, if your going to do it right do it the first time. bisides that, youve got to have some gauges, the first mod. i had was the egt gauge added to the stearing collar. later i added the others on the pillar. be looking into the signatures for mods completed, you will get an idea of what types of things to get, being as most of us run very similar set ups as they are proven.
Does the DP, or any other tuner allow you to manually adjust parameters and save them to memory? I'm thinking it might be nice to have a pre tuned chip as a starting point on which I could then manually adjust parameters to "tweak in" my particular driving style and truck performance.
having just installed mine my vote goes to DP, having come from a hypertech I know the difference between so called performance and real performance.....DP for sure, (after gauges like everyone else has stated)
I would add that you should do a couple supporting mods first. Besides gauges already pointed out, I suggest intake, exhaust, overboost regulator of some type, and maybe the CCV mod to keep the extra boost from popping off boots. You might also consider (YIKES!!! I almost hate to bring it up!!) a transmission kit of some kind. A lot of folks go with a BTS valve body, and DP will tune to accommodate it. I got my DP before I did any tranny mods, and now I have to send it back to get the tunes modified for the tranny work I'm about to do. If I were to do it again, I'd get the tranny done first, then the DP. But it WOULD be a DP.
