Bronco II engine swap

The tranny is shot in my bronc.(85 bronco II 4x4 2.9V-6) the motor isnt all that great on power took forever to get up to speed on the highway. My friend has a 3.8 supercharged V-6 from a 89 mercury cougar xr-7 could I drop that in i kno they have the small block bellhousing bolt pattern but would the small block tranny from the xr-7 bolt up to my transfercase? I need help before we have this tranny sent out and find out i cant use it with the 3.8S/C V-6. Help please this motor sucks down gas faster than that 3.8 did before the car was wrecked. Or could i drop a 4.0 in it with the stock tranny and just diffrent mounts? help I need to get this thing done very soon.
