Transmission problem.

I have a 99 f250 superduty with the 7.3 powerstroke.
Here is my problem ,when my transmission shifts gears from 2-3,3-4 it shifts very hard and seems to slam in gear.I tow a 32 ft fifth and other than the hard shift I have no problem. It doesnt slip when towing and other than the hard shift I have no complaint..Here is what is puzzling ,,The trans works perfect when the truck is cold.when I first leave of a morning or when it has set for a few hours it works fine. once it runs just a few miles the problem starts.I recently serviced the trans and the fluid looked normal in color and had no burnt smell.
I have around 190000 miles on the truck so trans is probably worn out but I want to make sure before I spend the big bucks having it rebuilt..

Welcome to the forum Pal.

Did you buy the truck new or used? How long has this been going on?

You seem to say the tranny acts up once it's warm. How about the winter? Same thing then?

I have a similar problem on my '99 F250 V-10. Like you said that when the tranny is cold it shifts normal, but when shifting from 2-3 it shifts hard if I am under hard excelleration. If I let out just before it shifts or if I am less then 1/2 throttle it shifts normally.

I purchased this truck 4 years and 80k miles ago. and it has been doing it since I purchased it. I am now over 115k on the truck and the problem still exists and hasn't gotten better or worse. I have a friend that has a '99 F250 with the 5.4L and he has the same problem. It does the same thing in the winter and summer. It does the same after a tranny service. Mechanic can't figure it out either. Said he would have to remove tranny to find the problem.

I would love to figure out what the problem is/a fix.

I purchased the truck several years ago when it had around 80000 miles on it.the problem started around 160000 miles it does same thing winter or summer.as I mentioned when i first drive it of the morning it shifts good until everthing gets warmed up.usually around ten or 12 miles then it starts the hard shifting.
One thing I have noticed is that If I hold throttle wide open truck with shift around 3450 rpm and doesnt shift as hard.almost normal also under normal driving my engine will turn around 2500 rpm before it shifts, several of my friends have basically the same truck and theirs will shift at a much lower rpm.

Well....I wish I knew more about trannies....but I don't. From what you describe, I'd say it's a tranny issue. You've already done the logical things like a fluid change so I don't know what else to recommend.

Be careful if you decide to reman the tranny. Get lots of references and check the company out big time. I read an awful lot of posts where guys have bought remans or had theirs remanned and not been happy.

Good Luck!

Joe

From what I have read here, if you need to get a remanufactured transmission, get a BTS transmission.

I think it is called the pressure modulation valve in the pump. The original one is aluminum. It will wear in the bore, causing pressure issues. They have upgraded ones that are steel and use and oring to seal better. You may be able to get away with that kind of fix. Take it to a dedicated trans shop.

Yeah, I am living with the shift problem until the tranny desides to go. It's been doing this for 4 years and 80k+ miles and hasn't changed. I will fix it when I have no more tranny left. I figure that by the time it lets go then it will be time for a new truck or a serious rebuild on this one.

Good News ,I finally solved my troubles ,the problem was the Shift and Throttle pressure control solenoid.Ford part # F81Z7G391CB .This is a dealer only part that cost almost $300.Lucky for me A friend has a trans that had been damaged in a wreck so I found A good used one.I had to remove the pan to change it.It has five solenoids built into it .The wiring harness plugs into the trans on the passenger, top, rear of the housing.A customer came into my my business the other day and as we were discussing my problem he recommend trying this from personal experience.

Hope this helps some other ford guy..

Interesting that it was the solenoid pack causing the issues. It is available aftermarket FYI. Usually around $150 i believe. Glad that fixed your troubles!
