ok so heres the deal...my dad set up a appointment to get his ball joints done on his f350...well he dropped it off at night and left it over night and said he would pick it up the next day at closing time...well the guy called at 2m (he started working on it at 7am...7hrs later....and said he got the left side done and wouldnt and couldnt do the right...now this is a friend of the family so my dad didnt want to cause a fight so he went and picked it up and scheduled an appt. with the ford daeler to do the other side...now the place where we originally took it said that they didnt have the tool required to remove the seal in the axle...(i dont know what this seal is) but he said he was able to remove the seal by LUCK!! well he also re used the seal even though we were told from ford that you shouldnt do that because itll cause leaks...now should my dad just have both replaced again (money is not an issue here...more reliability because its our primary work vehicle) or should he have the dealer just replace the seal? also the place took it originally is a very repitable place and i was surprised they couldnt get it done in 7 hrs...is this normal?
As far as I know the Ford superduty / dana front axle is the only one of its kind, Nobody uses the same seal set up as ford, so you could have a very reputable shop that does not do many sd front ends and they will look at the seal set up in the front axle and say wtf is that goofy bunch of $h1t. Yes their are a couple of special seal drivers for the front axle.
when you do the ball joints you have top replace a few seals a "dust" seal at the axle and a seal for the four wheel drive hub. it is recommended and if the ball joints are done already all you have to do is throw on a seal. one hour tops labor and should be easy since everything is new not rusted
