Anyone here clean the engine/engine bay in the 7.3 equipped truck? Any suggestions or tips? Are diesels or the 7.3 in general more water resistant then gasoline engines? Im thinking of using some degreaser and a scrub brush or soemthing to agitate it. Then rinsing off with a gentle stream of water from the hose. Anyone chime in here it be appreciated, thanks.
I use Simple Green and a water hose. Spray it on, and hose it off with a gentle stream. Don't use high pressure or your electronics won't like you much. After it's clean I use a Teflon based shine to dress it up a bit. The Teflon doesn't attract dirt.
Not everyone is as paranoid as me, but prior to washing I use plastic to cover the batteries, alternator, glow plug relay, power steering pump cover, intake (I have an open element), and the wiring harnesses by the PCM on the driver's side firewall. So far I've never had an issue with any of electrical stuff.
What "Teflon-based shine" product do you use, Pocket? The dirt-attraction issue is what has kept me from wanting to try what my brother-in-law suggested, which is Armorall.

It's DuPont Teflon Tire Shine. Comes in a black bottle. I like it because the tires are super easy to clean after you start using this. Haven't cleaned the engine bay in over a month and all the rubber and plastic is still shining.
Ill probably use 303 protectant on all the plastic/rubber peices that are safe to spray stuff on. Then Klasse AIO and Klasse sealent on any paint/painted metal I find in there.
Where can i get simple green? Ive heard good things about it.
DEFINITELY cover the PS pump resevior (there's a vent hole in the cap that water and/or SG will go right into (BAD). I cover that, my 6637 filter, and alt. Batteries & relays I leave open, FWIW....
I will give the tire stuff a go, though. I like everything looking squeaky-clean under there!!
Thanks guys. I'll make another pass at this this afternoon on the way home. I have to mail out my latest sample to Blackstone anyway, and the all those stores are right around the corner from the UPS store.
Did it today, lil nervous about it at first but it worked out great.
I used plastic and alum. foil to cover anything i could see, probably more then necesary but i didnt wanna take any chances. Used some Black magic 2in1 engine degreaser/shine. then used a some old sponges and a brush to agitate the grease. Used the hose the rinse everything off.
I ran by Walmart yesterday on the way home and picked up the stuff that Pocket recommended. I'm going to be using my hose on Friday afternoon to get all three of my engines cleaned up. We're currently under a ban on washing cars, but the ban doesn't list "engines", so I'm going to go for it and get 'er done.
