Hey guys....haven't been back to the forum for a while because the truck HAS been running flawlessly. Anyway, here's what I got:
Yesterday the truck didn't want to start. Thought it was a dead battery, but after going through everything I found that the AC compressor pulley has locked up. Another problem is that the truck is not at home....so I'm trying to figure out how to get it back without a tow.
A little background....the compressor started to act wierd two weeks ago. Anytime I turned the AC on it would turn, but I could hear the belt slipping. With the AC off, no problems. I procrastinated getting it fixed because I don't use the truck all that much....lesson learned!! Anyway, here's my questions:
-Can I use a belt for a non AC truck on my truck without removing the compressor? Bypass the compressor only so all the other accessories work?
-Any idea how to free up the clutch on the pulley?
-If not, anyone else have some ideas to limp it home? Unfortunately, it's a good 20 miles from the house, in the middle of no where.
Just checked on autozone for the belt....I guess non-AC trucks have an idler pulley that bolt in place of the compressor, so the short belt is out. Anyone have any ideas?
Yep, you will need the PN# 19A216, A/C Drive Belt Idler Assy, If you decide to bypass the AC, the good news is...you can use one from many different engine/year combinations. You may get lucky and find one in a junk yard.
The bearing in the AC clutch assy is the most likely culprit. You can get the whole assy at most auto part stores. It's not too hard to change but you need to find out if it 's the clutch or the compressor that's locked up.
The clutch assy costs about $110.

Cudajim....I appreciate the post!! I went ahead and bit the bullet and had it towed (no time to get to the junkyard anytime soon). My buddy's garage is going to take a look at it and give me the damage. I'll report when I know something!!
Had the same problem. Use the belt off of a non turbo (such as a 93 ford 7.3 diesel) and just by pass the compressor. Hope this helps. It is shorter and you are able to by pass the compressor without the idler. I had owned a 93 and just happened to have the belt. Tried it and it got me home.
It's good you you have a buddy that won't pizz on your leg and tell you it's raining. I hope it's not the compressor, that can get expensive....but I'll bet the bearing in the clutch went belly-up.
