have any of you guys had a aluminum wheel crack, if so what caused it? I had one of my Weld wheels crack right in the bend where the hub section meets the rim. it's a very small hairline crack with a slow leak. also can these things be welded up or am I out of a wheel?
you could probably weld it from the inside, but it WILL discolor the finish on the outside, plus aluminum isn't real fun to weld on... not to mention it will probably be a PITA to balance that wheel/tire combo... never had a wheels crack on me, though... I did see a n aluminum forged wheel at the races in mexico cracked in two pieces once... must have been a good hit...
I cracked a "cold forged" wheel too. I would not weld it. I replaced mine and used the old one as a conversation piece.
As for what caused my crack, mine took a big hit to a rock. Bent the bead a little, and cracked the wheel between the lugs.
I actually just had one of my wheels crack. The best I can figure out is that it happened when I had Les Schwab install 4 new metal valve stems (after having a rubber stem pop out driving down the road). You could see scratch marks on the back of the wheel where it looked like someone who didnt know what they were doing with the tire machine had pressed on the wheel wrong. Fortunitly I was able to get Schwab to replaced it with a whole new wheel.
Yep, I recently had a cracked wheel too. The factory aluminium front on my
01 F350 4x4 DRW. No Idea how it cracked. Never hit anything not a mark on it.
It was cracked inside the bead. 500+ for a new one.
