Forgive me for posting here but you Ranger boys seem a little more mechanically inclined than the Explorer forum.
My 96 Explorer is similiar enough to a Ranger anyways.
I noticed that when the pedal is on the floor the throttle is open only about 80%. There is slack in the cable. First, is there a way to adjust it? Second, are they expensive to replace?
When you manually open it under the hood, the cable side hits the mechanical stop but then you can still open it further by grabbing the butterfly valve. There may be excessive wear on this throttle body (125k miles).
Anybody experience this? I bet if you guys have someone put the pedal on the floor and check your throttle position you may be getting cheated.
By the way, I pulled the slack out of the cable on the pedal side, and cinched a couple of zip ties on to take up the slack. This is temporary but it made a heck of a difference.
I have used the tie wrap method on 3 Rangers and 1 Explorer to date. I've driven probably 300,000 miles with that fix between them with no problems. If the tie wraps break, just replace it. I haven't had to replace one yet, nor have I had to replace a broken cable. Works great!

PT17Pilot is right on...it's just a little stretching in the cable. A tie wrap seems to be the common (and cheap) fix that lasts. Tightening it up was one of the first things I did with my truck.
