460 pulley problem?
Hey guys I just started to put the front of my engine back together and the groves on my crank pulley and the groves on my water pump are not lining up and I have no idea why? I put the balancer and damper back on and it looks as if the water pump pully sticks out to far I cant figure it out. Does anyone have any 70's 460 pics you guys can send me if so please send to justin_friermood@yahoo.com Thanks

I found this but I dissassembled the engine myself and I cant find,"or remember" any spacer.
The '78-and-up 460s are externally balanced and use a spacer behind the balancer with this funky external weight. Our early engine was internally balanced, so it was back to the salvage yard to find the correct early round spacer with no weight. Buying it new from Ford (PN D0OZ-6359-A) will set you back $46.28. If your engine block has casting number D1VE-6015-AB, it does not use the weighted spacer. If your engine block is casting number D9TE-6015-AB it uses the weighted spacer.
According to the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog (Section 60.7, pages 6 & 7), either D1VE-AB or D9TE-AB casting numbered blocks were used in 1979.
Whatever spacer you require, the vibration damper and flexplate must match the spacer.
D1SZ-6375-A .. Flexplate & D4VZ-6316-A .. Damper are used in conjunction with D0OZ-6359-A, the NON weighted spacer.
D9TZ-6375-A .. Flexplate & D9TZ-6316-B .. Damper are used with D9TZ-6359-A which is the weighted spacer.

Mil1ion That is the way it looks but it somehow has to be the other wayaround! because the water pump pulley is all the way on however the bolts arnt in it, but it is sittin pretty flush and the water pump nose isnt to long because that isnt a new pump I just painted it. I drove the truck home that originally had this motor in it and it had all the belts on it and they were fine. It has to be something I did but the only thing I changes was a gear drive. at this point the belt wouldnt even stay on the truck if I even tried to put them on. Thanks

It is more like the crank pullies are in too far, I may have no choice but to make a shim but why I should have to do that is beyond me I have absolutelly no idea what has happened? You would think the crank geardrive gear is alot skinnier than he chain one was, but I dont think so! and you can hear the weighted spacer go flush against the oil sling washer when I install it and everything looks good until you install the pullies. just dont know
