my buddy called and said his clutch pedal went to the floor on his 04 4.0 ranger. said no fluid leaks or anything, so i suspect the slave cylinder went. he said the slave is on the inside of the trans and you gotta pull the trans to do the slave, so might as well do the clutch too. how hard is it to replace both these on this truck? ive done it on a 94 cummins, so the trans should be alot lighter lol. just wondering how bad of a job it is to do
IMHO Rangers are one of the easier vehicles to change a clutch in. If it's a 2wd that's obviously a little easier, not having the added weight of the transfer case to drop too. There's a support member that runs under the transmission. If you have a way to raise the vehicle on a lift you can just disconnect one side of it and swing it down out of the way to drop the transmission. Otherwise you need to remove the bolts from both sides to remove the support member completely and they can sometimes be rusted on, needing to be cut off, which can be a pain. Others have mentioned bleeding the air out of the clutch line can be tricky, sometimes needing to 'bench' bleed the system. There's a good YouTube vidoe on that. I've always left the line in place and haven't had an issue. The slave cylinder is very easy to change out once the transmission is out. Also replace the pilot bearing while you're in there and maybe have the flywheel checked. Hope that helps. Let us know how it works out for you guys.
