I was wondering how much play should the tie rod ends have? How much should you be able to push them in or out? Also ,how do you check the ball joints on a 2 wheel drive truck? Thanx for the help!!
Ive never checked my tie rod ends, but I dont think they should have much play at all. If you want to check you balljoints jack up one wheel at a time, grab the top and bottom of the tire then push and pull. See if theres any play, shouldnt be any or very little.
After 64,000 miles on my factory tires i thought it was time. I didnt notice it too much till after the swap.I went with the Goodyear silent armor tires and monroe reflex shocks,I just started driving the truck on a reg. basis as the wife got a new vehicle,I only got to drive it when we towed our 5th wheel, that sounds bad!
You may also get your wife to sit behind the steering wheel and rock the steering with the engine off while you lay on the ground and look at all the steering components for looseness. I was shocked at my results and had to replace my track bar, both drag links, weld a bracket to house the stabilizing bar as the bracket had broken off, and finally got it re alighned with new ball joints. Now it drives like new.
