Rear end play

I was testing my rear u joints today and I noticed that I could turn the drive shaft quite a bit before the rear engaged. Does this sound normal?? From my experience there shouldn't be alot of play ant it should engage fairly quickly. How much, if any end play should there be and how do I measure it? Any help would be welcome. Thanks!

End play between a crown and pinion should be between .006" and .012" backlash. Take the rear cover off and place a dial indicator on a crown gear tooth then see what the back and fourth values are.

As long as it wasn't making any noise, and the pinion isn't loose, I wouldn't worry about it. An axle with some miles on it is going to have some slop one way or another.

this is true. If you turn the drive shaft in order to check for drive line backlash, you are including the slop between the yolk splines, axle splines, differential gears slop, as well as crown and pinion backlash. All that could add up to 1/8" turn on the drive shaft....maybe more.

I just put my rear end back together with all used parts and I have .030" backlash.

As long as your contact pattern is centered then backlash is not a huge deal. If you're setting up a used crown and pinion with used bearings then you can get away with a little more as long as the diff's quiet.

This is the first one I've ever put together and I believe I did it right. I had my dad on the phone every hour asking questions. He said with a used ring and pinion you don't want to change the contact pattern that has already been worn in. I've put about 20 miles on it up till now and now issues.
