Ok, my cousin just installed a Short Ram inake on his 2002 cougar, it makes a really nice sound to it now, similar to a subaru in a way. sound cool when it shoft too, almost like a BOV...
so, onto my question:
I've been told in my truck that i have an "Air Silencer" in the air box or attached to it.. is this true? I know the 5.0 stangs have em but not too sire on the truck.. if so, how can i take it out or can i take it out.. i want that airy sound, kinda cool, but i dont want to change the intake, its stock.
My 92 airbox is wide open inside, I have no idea about the 94's.......when I pull the filter out, there is nothing but a big rectangular open box. Silencers are baffles inside the box itself......like a muffler has, to slow down and quiet the air. If you have those in your box.......you can cut them out and it will probly sound different. I don't know if it will be a LOT different with the stock box though.
None the 87-97 fords I have had . Wide open box and tubes. You could put a different filter system and may gain some "wide open air noise. But If you have MAF just leave as is. and get hi flow stock type filter.
the silencer your talking about is on the passenger side fender. it has nothing to do with intake, what it does is muffles the sound of the air pump. if you take it off it will sound more of a putting sound.

No, he is asking about the right thing. My '90 F150 and my '91 Bronco, both with 302s, had the silencer on them. It's on the end of the snorkel that goes from the radiator support to your airbox. If you have one, when you pull the snorkel out of the box, there is a part that protrudes into the box and kinda narrows down from the size of the opening on the box. That narrow part has holes in the side of it, about 4-6 of them IIRC (I cut them off in the early '90s when I was advised to do so by a Ford Motorsport engineer so it's been a long time). You just cut that protruding part with the holes off with a box knife. It will give you the "airy" sound you are talking about.
My '91 F150, with the 300, does not have the silencer. I guess the 300 doesn't pull that much air.

all the 4.9 and 460 engine do not come with the radiator restriction.
look between the air box and your radiator and you will see the scoop on your 91 4.9 engine.
I said my 300 doesn't have the silencer, not that it doesn't have an air snorkel, or scoop, as you call it.
But, this points out that the snorkel (scoop) on the 300 is different than that on the 302 (and, by extension, I assume the 351). The 300 snorkel goes thru the rad support and gets it's air from behind the left headlight. The 302/351 snorkel goes up on top of the rad support and is open to the front of the truck. I guess this gives more of a "ram air" effect to the Windsors and therefore necessitates the use of a silencer? Are there gains for the 300 if I open up the front part of the snorkel where it turns toward the headlight so the air goes directly into the snorkel and is therefore pressurized somewhat by the "ram air" effect?
