I went to a salvage yard yesterday and I found three old Detriot deisels with blowers on them. How hard and expensive would it be to rebuild and convert them to run on a V8? What is needed? Also, how can you tell which type of blowers they are? How much should I pay for them assuming they aren't junk? And what should I look for when determining their condition? Thanks!!
Hot Rod did an article on that many years ago. They spent a lot of money making it work. Diesel engines don't turn many RPMs so the blowers likewise don't turn many in that use. But gas engines spin faster so the tolerances and balancing need to be better.
If I recall correctly you should check the backlash between the rotors, the rotor endplay and determine whether you are looking at 4-71, 6-71, 8-71 or 10-71 blowers. I kinda remember something about the types of bearings or gears in the end plates (cases?) but just can't recall what. Maybe some else will jump in here and talk about that.
