Is there any way to make it shift out of OD when it starts up a hill? The electronic plug on the side of the IP is adjustable. Will that change anything?

The following web page explains the FIPL (Fuel Injection Pump Lever) position adjustment.

I am not a 100% sure but by setting the Throttle closed voltage above the recommended 1.1V (i.e. say 1.2-1.3V) you may be able to force the tranny controller to shift out of OD automatically if you are going up a hill under full throttle as the full throttle voltage will be well above 4.0 volts. The only problem with this is the rest of your tranny now shifts harder which in my mind is undesirable.

The best thing to do is probably to set it up to factory specs. (i.e. 1.1V closed throttle and just use your OD button. Double check that your wide open throttle voltage at this setting is over 4.0 Volts. If not you might have a bad FIPL. Also check the FIPL with a good digital voltmeter to ensure it has no deadspot (where voltage goes to zero) between closed and open throttle.

Note, it is not a good idea to lug your truck up any hills in OD. You will burn out (overheat the tranny as there is just too much torque at the lower rpm)

Remember there is two ways to get the same amount of Hp to the back wheels in two ways.

1, Lower RPM, Higher Torque - very hard on the tranny.
2, Higher RPM, Lower Torque - easier on the tranny.

Adjusting the FIPL sensor will change the RPM at which the transmission will shift.

Why not just use the cancel switch?

so according to the web page you sent me. I need to adjust the sensor to 1800 ohms by adjusting the 3 screws correct? Then do the volt tests. This is what I got out of it. Please let me know if I'm correct. I would like to get this correct since I had to remove and replace when installing the new pump.
Thanks

FIPL adjustment: key on engine off. Negative lead of voltmeter on battery ground, positive lead on paper cllip or small probe slid in along middle wire of FIPL connector.
At idle position adjust bracket to obtain 1.05-1.1 volts. should see smooth and steady increase in voltage as the lever is moved to wide open throttle position, and read around 3.8 -3.9 volts, no more than 4.3. This should give you decient shifts.

As far as kicking it out of overdrive at the bottom of the hills, that is easily done by pressing the button in on the end of the shift lever, A light on the end of the lever will illuminate indicating that the OD is off.
