Unhappy 97 Ranger Transfercase Rebuilds?

Hey guys, new to the board but not new to trucks! I have a 97 ranger 4x4 with 4.0/5speed and have been having vibrations and loud popping noises coming from the transfercase in 4wd. It feels like it goes in and comes out of 4wd constantly. I talked to the dealer and they said that it was probably the transfercase was going bad! What are the possibilities of a rebuild? Anybody else ever had this kind of problem?

Thanks! This site is awesome!

What do you mean? A rebuild is possible if you know how to do it or can afford to pay someone. A good used replacement is probably cheaper, though, and definitely quicker.

I think this site has some info on that t-case.
