Folks, I need some help here. Just yesterday my Expy start some a strange, while travelling at highway (65mph) or city (35mph) speeds the vehicle will suddenly stall. Turn off the ignition and the vehicle restarts just fine. I just finished a 1600 mile trip over the last two days and it occur 4 ot 5 times. Only once or twice the stall was preceeded by a slight hesitation. I hooked up the code reader and the only code it pulled up is P0320 (Ignition Engine Speed (PIP) Input circuit fault).
Fortunately, it didn't occur in the mountains or while passing. The only thing done to the vehicle was pigtailing an extra cigarette power socket for a satellite radio power adaptor a few days prior. So I don't think this has anything to do with it. I was planning on changing the fuel filter after this trip, but I don't think this should have cause the vehicle to just stall "mid-flight". I would have expected a fuel filter or pump problem to cause more hesitation before stalling.
Any suggestions. I can't seem to replicate the problem it just seems to happen when it pleases.
...I hate to speculate on these type of problems, but it sounds to me like a loose ignition connection, most likely in the column. Another possibility is something getting hot and cutting out, but the loose connection would be my starting point.
I had a similar problem when my son had the inverter hooked up to the rear cig plug to run the x-box. It happened twice before I noticed the cord was not fully plugged into the socket. I pushed it in the rest of the way and it never happened again. I dont know why, how or anything else but it worked.
jsmallwood, that does make a bit of sense. Using lite voltage, such as the 12vdc in vehicles, if you limit any ability to draw power through proper connection or have proper ground, it will create a short. That will then create a excess power draw and cause other areas to loose the ability to function and thus failure. I deal with electrical locking mechanisms and find poor work, such as pinched wires, that portray this condition.
Totoro, I would disconnect the cig. lighter extension to see if that cures the condition. If so, I would rerun the wire or double check your connections for bared or pinched wires.
Well folks, going to ask for your opinions/advice for this issue. Shortly after I made my original post, I had removed the extra cigarette lighter/vehicle power adapter socket check the areas near where I had spliced into the original wiring. Everything had electrical tape applied to prevent any shorting.
I still experience the same stalling condition while cruising every once it a while. It may have occurred 2 to 3 times since my last post. However, lately it has been occuring once every 2 to 4 weeks. The last couple occurrences, by the time I got around to finding and hooking up my code reader, the codes where gone.
Today, it did stall on me again just as I stepped a little on the gas to speed up a little and I got the same DTC code: P0320. Don't know if the freeze frame data is going to help, but this is what I got this time:
i know on the 3v engines(2005+), the throttle bodies would cause that issue, as the tps was integrated. wasn't a "common" issue on the 2v's, so i am skeptical on that being the issue.
Toroto,
I suspect you may have a shorted wire(s) or loose connection at the crankshaft sensor. My Expy had 3 shorted wires just before the PCM because they rubbed against the sharp edges of the front right fender. It drove me nut when I tried to locate the shorts, it threw the same code as your. Let us know what you find.
Thanks for the advice, I'll see what I can find. The most annoying thing about it is the amount of time that can transpire between occurrences. While inconvenient, hard faults are much easier to troubleshoot than intermittent ones.
Totoro,
I forgot to mention another possibility of the stall problem could be your IAC valve getting sticky intermittently. They went bad on me every 60k-70k miles. It's located right behind the throttle body.
Any luck with your problem? I have had the same problems with my 03 Expedtion 5.4. It's driving me crazy!! Any help would be great!
Since my last post on this topic, I brought my vehicle in near the end of June, one COP was replaced and the air intake system was cleaned (throttle body etc). Afterwards, it did the same stall twice, beginning and end of July, and no issues since. So I won't declare the issue resolved yet since I could go months before it happens again.
When I can scrape up the extra dough, I'll get all the COPs repalced since, with the exception of the one that was recently replaced, I believe they are all original and I'm a little over 100K miles on them now. The engine runs smoothly, so I haven't been in a real hurry to replace.
How has everyone's experience been getting replacement COPS? eBay etc...??? If ebay, is there a particular seller? The dealers want an arm and a leg for each and mother nature didn't give me that many arms and legs to replace all 8.
Thanks for the reply. I've tried many things over the last 4 years myself. My problems only happen at about 2000 rpm under certain condtions. the problem burned up my CATS now so I really need to solve this problem to avoid burninn up new ones. I've changed 2 coil packs, Crank Sensor, Cam Sensor, Alt harness and reflashed PCM, and TPS. I also cleaned out my cats because they were plugged. I read on the board that a guy with this problem chased for over a year and then ran new set of wires from the pcm to the crank sensor. I think I will try this next.
I've read where others have had good results buying coils from "uneeksupply" on eBay. I saved the seller's name in my eBay account and plan to use them when it's time for me to buy coils. Also recommended was "lucky7autoinjectors" for fuel injectors, duh.
