I replaced my worn and wobbly steering box with a reman from Advance Auto. Moving the truck today in the driveway I noticed that it now takes an excessive amount of effort to move the steering wheel, even in neutral with the engine revving.
Truck is 78 F-150 4x4, power steering. Relatively new pump and hoses, all the linkage turned smooth before changing the steering box.
I am familiar with the little nut and screw that you adjust the tension with, but it came with a paint dob on it and I assumed that it had been pre-set at the factory.
Any suggestions? Could I have installed the pressure and return lines backwards? I am pretty sure they have different size fittings, but its at an angle you can't see very well.
If I remember right the fittings are different. You could look in a manual that has some pictures and figure out the line placement. Someone here might be able to look and tell you also.
If your lines are correct the box has a problem and should be returned.
The paint dob is most likely a tamper indicator and if you messed with it they might not warranty it.
Danger, Will Robinson, DANGER!
I bought a steering gear that was adjusted improperly and it contaminated the system with metal fragments. Everything had to be replaced.
Did you flush the old fluid out? If the box gets clogged its pretty much history. The symptom is: It turns really hard and slow!? Infact, I would just describe it as if there was no power steering at all.
Sorry!

It does turn really hard and slow. And it seems harder to turn it left than right. I have a manual steering car that I've driven for years, and it actually seems more like the power steering on the truck is fighting me than merely a lack of power assist.
jack the front up and cycle the steering back and forth many times with the engine running. Mine did this for quite a while until I got all the air purged
Eric, what's a good filter to use? I imagine a inline filter like you would use for gas with the clear glass etc would be too restrictive for thicker PS fluid (or ATF). Don't recall ever seeing PS filters in the parts stores.
The last Wix I bought was $17. The last Ford Kits I bought off ebay were $6 ea with shipping.
The part you bought was probably a repackaged Wix filter. The Ford kit parts are definitely Wix units.
Most of the time the clerks have never heard of such a part and you have to insist that they look it up. I get SOOOO tired of clerks that have never heard of something that swear it does not exist. It gets even more fun when they can't find it in the damn computer...
