Well, ive removed my valve covers, which are orange, but i cant be certain its original paint, looks like it. Block was at one time black
numberdummy, who has been around more Ford blocks and parts said no blue, prior to 68......i know my engine is a 1962. Guess ill have to paint that waterpump black.....but it looks great old Ford blue., screwit, im leavin it blue.
I have two original paint 292s, one from 1959 and one from 1962. Both are out and have been disassembled. Both have original V dark blue blocks (way darker and w a slight purple hue than the Ford Corporate Blue blocks of the late 1960s), intake manifolds, heads, oil pans, crankcase breather vents, oil pumps, front engine supports, dipstick tubes all v dark blue for both. References DO say that both black and v dark blue were used for 1959. My guess is it would depend on what paint they had on hand for certain batches. Ford did that stuff all the time. Also both engines for certain have a first layer of “Mercury” green paint under the blue (which I color matched for my first coat of paint), and is left exposed as green where the flywheel goes. Someone else on one of these threads made a similar discovery on their 292. Correct valve cover color for 1959 is TORCH RED (red-orange color). Did a computer scan color match w the original valve cover paint and obtained a PERFECT visual match w TORCH RED. An official 1959 color option. Incidentally it is the exact same color for the FORD lettering on the hubcaps (Fridge Era) and the spark plug shields for the ‘59 (which had been painted Torch Red on all sides over the base layer of plating).
