My truck is making a noise like a very a loud truck tire. Started all of a sudden. Speeds up with vehicle speed but doesn't seem to change after shifts. One shop diagnosed bad power steering pump, but referred me to a dealer. I am afraid to go to the dealer without getting advice here. Is that how a bad PSP sounds?
Another shop today diagnosed bad ring and pinion and referred me to a transmission shop. I am hoping it is just a bearing in the rear end or something else cheap. I am towing the trailer to Florida on Friday. If I replace the ring and pinion I'm going to have a hard time putting 500 miles on it before Friday.
Rear differential Carrier bearings. Initially, the dealer called and quoted an $1,800 repair charge. I balked; told them to put it back together. I then called a private shop, who said the ring and pinions rarely go out, and that it was probably bearings. Dealer called back and then said it was only bearings and would cost $1,200. By then I lost faith in the dealer and had them put it together enough for me to take it to the other shop.
