I have an 88 F250 351W EFI that I have been trying to make useful.I have just gone through a rewiring do to a fire with good results,Except...this morning I finally got it running which was a lot easier than I expected,it fired up and ran well.I took it for a voyage and about the time it gets to warm up i'm going up a pretty good hill and I notice that I'm pinging more than I would like. From this point forward as the engine gets warmer the rougher it runs, acting and sounding that the time is way to far advanced, finally it just dies.Try to turn it over and it can hardly go over the top and won't start.I get towed home and let it cool way down and it starts up.My timing is set at 10btdc,new plug wires, button and cap and plugs. What do you think,I'm about ready to look for some C4.Thanks Ron
Did you check the timing by unplugging the spout connector? And just to check everything is well, I would pull the codes out of the computer to see if it sees a problem.
Thanks for reply F2,Yea,I have pulled the spout. The only code reader that I have access to is a Sears one that gave me no codes. What would the module at the distributor act like if it were going bad?I have replaced everything else! Thanks again,Ron
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Mar-02 AT 04:50 PM (EST)]Are you using an adjustable (dial in)timing gun to set your timing. I caught this in another forum post. If your setting the gun at 10degrees, the light should be lighting on 0 deg. on craqnk. The gun automatically compensates for your dial in. A guy had the same problem on an older carbed model.
If not, see if backing off 5deg makes a difference. Sounds like your spark advance is too high after it warms up.
Good luck!!

Yea, like a flat rock!
easy to break and won't roll.
Dodge Trucks, the rules have changed so they could win!
Thanks KSisk,I'm using a straight ole timing light which seems to work fine.I'm going to try and work my way down a few degrees at a time.It just doesn't seem to be consistant as to how it feels and sounds when I turn the starter. One time you know that the timing is to far advanced and the next it seems fine. When it gets up to temperature it always feels way advanced but the light tells me its 10 degrees.I haven't got much else to replace cept for the computer stuff and the coil. When it works like this it makes me long for the ole points and condensor. Thanks,Ron
just a thought but do you have a fresh t-stat in it, i know my old truck the temp gauge didnt read quite rite and my truck was getting to hot and it would run like that and finaly die. Hope this helpskeep it cool!!!!
Is part of your carb running too lean? If the carb is running too lean, OR if you have one or two vacuum leaks it will run hot like that. Too lean = HOT! Hope you figure it out, anyhow.
