Fuel injectors

I have an 88 5.0 in a Bronco. I suspect that the injectors need to be cleaned or replaced. I have read that the cleaners that you add in the gas have questionable effects on O2 sensors ect. and that they may not work very well at actually cleaning the injector. I see that there are shops that will clean them ultrasonically, replace the o-rings and flow test for about $25.00/injector. Does this really work? Would it be better to replace them with new? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Some garages have a machine they hook directly to the fuel rail. They unhook the vehicle fuel pump, and hook their machine up, which has a potent cleaning agent in it. They actually start the engine and run it on this stuff. I have had good results from this, and it should be cheaper. I also have taken the injectors out myself, and have taken them to the ford dealer. For $12.00 they cleaned and checked 4 injectors for me.

I've done this twice now on 2 different 302 Broncos.

Go to the Ford dealer and have them run a SBSC(?) test.I forget the exact name of the test. It'll run you 1 hour(around $60) and the printout will show the EXACT condition of all injectors. On one Bronc it showed 4 injectors with bad patterns. This truck was pinging during light load. You can find a SET of 19 pound injectors for around $100 over the net that are near new take-offs. Easy to change out(pull the upper manifold) and it ran great!!

The other Bronco was diagnosed with a bad fuel pump. Another ez swap and about $130 for a pump. (one snag was we ended up using a totally different year pump because the assembly wasn't long enough)

All in all, paying Ford to troubleshoot saved a lot of shot gun replacing of parts.

I've also heard good things about the system where they hook your engine up with a strong cleaner and run it.

I've also heard about getting a EFI fuel pump and attaching it to the output end of the injector and running a cleaner thru the injector while tapping it with 12volts and thought about doing that.

You can also remove the O2 sensor, clean the injectors then replace it.

Thanks for all the help. Hooking up to the fuel rail is definetly faster than removing them. If I need to remove them, I would be tickled to get a set for $100.00 though. Has anyone tried the ultrasonic cleaning? I remember a debate about what # injectors were in the 302. Some folks had 19# injectors while some had 14#......Why?

Thanks for the address. I'll be placing an order today. My Bronco has the orange 19#.......you were right. I also have an 87 Lincoln with the 302 and that does have 14# injectors. Might explain the difference in gas mileage between the two. Thanks to all!!
