Being a below average mechanic (at best), I was hoping someone here would know what to do. I was leaving my home street this morning and heard a sound like the transmission disengaged and the engine revved for a brief moment. I pulled over to listen for anything else and found that the truck would not move in reverse. It seems to go forward fine. When I put it in reverse, the rpms drop a little just like when I out it into drive. This is a 2000 F150 with the 4.6 liter, auto transmission. I really appreciate any trouble shooting direction.
Tons of rain in the Houston area lately. We have not had any for the past 3 or 4 days, though.

It's very possible that the MLPS has water infiltration damage. It was a very common problem on the '94-'95 model 4R70W's-Ford revised the sealing gasket on the MLPS after that, and it hasn't been as big of an issue....but it does happen.
That's what I would look at changing first-esp considering the rain that you and I have had in this area.

Thanks for your help, Johnny! I spoke with a Service guy at Champion Ford in Katy and he said the odds were way against that. I will see about changing it first, though, because repairing or replacing the tranny would be pretty painful at the moment.
Reverse is the weakest gear, and often goes first. In my experience, it'll cost almost as much to fix it as to rebuild it. That's because they will probably have to drop the trans and open it up in any case.
Maybe somebody here can pinpoint your problem, but I think you will have to bite the bullet and find an established (and hopefully honest) trans shop. Mine did the same thing as yours at 138K. Cost me $1100. Sorry.
