Transmission Slips In Reverse
Im working on a 1999 F-150, 4.6L, 4X4, Automatic. The transmission does fine in all forward gears. And it will go in reverse when cold. However, after it warms up and has been driven, when you put it in reverse, it slips really bad. It is going into reverse, just has a hard time backing up. It feels just like a transmission does when its in drive and slipping except it does it in reverse. This truck has nearly 300,000 miles on it. Original transmission. The fluid looks good and is at the proper level. Has anyone experienced this and know if it could be fixed? I may just need a new transmission, but I was wondering if maybe something in the valve body could be replaced to fix it. Thanks for any help.
My bet is the servo/ clutch discs etc may be worn and not able to all apply enough pressure to the discs.
When cold, the fluid has a bit more viscosity and applies more pressure.
This indicates no shift solenoids are in trouble or there would be a code to that effect.
Time to consider another trans or a rebuild.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info. Im going to take it to a tranny shop and see if it would be feasable to rebuild or just replace.
