Okay I am really new to this page and I am just trying to figure out an answer to what I would think is a simple question. Does anyone know how to remove a factory shifter **** from a 2001 Ford Ranger? I want to put a custom **** on the shifter and I don't see anything that will help me remove it, and I tried just simply unscrewing it, but it didn't budge. Help!!! Thank you
Shift ****. We gave that name to a guy we worked with a few years back. I think he's flipping burgers now.
They used to be threaded way back when, but now they're glued on. I remember a similar thread where RP said that you had to cut the silly thing off. It may just be pressed on and need more force, but someone will be along shortly to confirm.
Oh, for pete's sake, I'm sorry. Welcome to FTE geargirl. Nice screen name. You'll like it here. Lots of great info and I'm sure we're all glad to have ya.
The **** is just a press fit w/ splines that go vertically on the shaft (to keep the **** from turning). On earlier models, they didn't stay on real well, so on the later models they fit really tight. Basically, you need to pull down the rubber boot (its held up by a washer on the top end of the shifter shaft, lift it over that) so you have a place on the bottom side of the **** to hit w/ your hammer. A few well-placed smacks should cause the **** to go flying, so be careful where your eyes are as you smack it.
The second part can be just as difficult. The shifter shaft is a piece of tubing with these splines on the outside, so no 'normal' **** will fit. The Mustang ***** have a 12mm thread, so I tapped the inside of the tube for 12mm, then bought a piece of 12mm all-thread (actually cut the head off a 12mm bolt) and threaded that into the **** and into the shaft. I made a little cardboard spacer that I put between them to get the **** oriented correctly when tight.
Here is what it looks like now, w/ the Mustang **** and the FX4 lvl 2 leather boot: (its not a great photo, but you'll get the idea)
A hair dryer or any other good head generating device, do it outside in the sun. Use the hair dryer and heat up the bottom of the shift **** as much as you possibly can. You're doing anything you can to get it real nice and warm. In Texas 105 degree heat, it'll pop right off, so 'round there should be good.
The **** is just held on with glue, so once it's warmed up a firm tug (or a 1-2 shift ) and it'll pop right off in your hand. Clean the stick up a little bit, and you're good to go.
Many of the aftermarket "one size fits all" shift ***** that are held on with set screws tend to work loose and rattle after a while. I fought them for a good three months, several different ones, trying everything I could to quiet it down. I ended up getting an old school OEM Chevrolet automatic shift **** and pounding it onto the lever. Now I may have to get a hacksaw to take it off.
