Hi, I'm new to the forum because I'm looking for some help about removing my shifter **** on my 2000 F-150 with the 5 speed manual tranny. I would like to buy an aftermarket shifter **** that will fit my shifter lever, but I can't seem to find out how to remove the ****. I've tried twisting, pulling, etc to remove it, but it won't budge. All I've done so far is scuff the stock one up. Anyone know how to remove such a stock ****? Plus, does anyone know of a good direct fit aftermarket **** that will work for my truck? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan.
Just yank on it and it will come off. I was taking a turn a little too fast one time and was grabbing on to the shifter and the **** came off and I nearly lost control of the truck. I think there might be a little glue but mostly just pressed on, I had to keep pressing mine back on after it came off the first time
It looks like the removal part of your question has already been handled. You will probably not have as much trouble finding as replacement as you are in removing the original. The good news is that a lot of the aftermarket stuff will work -- they are just not made to fit exactly like the OEM part that you are struggling to remove. While your stock **** pushes on, most of the aftermarket stuff will slide over the end of the stick and then hold on with a set screw.
You can find basic offerings at any of the parts store. I got one at a NAPA store after my OEM **** came off in my hand while shifting under acceleration. (I feel your pain, triton_2002).
There are a million places online that sell them. I suggest you start with the FTE sponsors (a little plug there ). If you don't find what you are looking for with them, that is what Google is for.
I found that I did not like the stylized aftermarket stuff. I ended up going to the local Ford dealer and ordering an OEM replacement ****. Knocked it onto the stick with a rubber hammer and have been good to go ever since.
