Opinions vary but mine is that auxiliary coolers do a better job of cooling the transmission fluid than in-radiator coolers. Think about it. You have 250+ degree fluid going into a cooler surrounded with 160-200 degree coolant compared to ambient temperature air surrounding an add-on cooler. That extra heat from the transmission will also put more stain on your radiator to keep the engine cool, especially if cooling is marginal. The only reason the automakers designed the in-radiator cooler is because it saved them a few cents in manufacturing costs.

If I owned a car/truck with an A/T I would have an in-tank cooler and an aircooled auxiliary, but with a thermostatic controller to prevent overcooling in the winter. That's the only downside of an aircooled auxiliary, in the cool weather your fluid stays too cool, which is just as bad (well, almost) as too hot. Someone sells the thermostatic control for engine oil cooling systems, can't remember who. It looks like a cast bronze block with 6 line connections. With it, all the oil goes thru the wet cooler and if it comes out of that hotter than the setpoint, it sends it to the aircooled cooler. If not, it returns it to the tranny.

Mkrog, any local radiator shop should be able to make up whatever you want. If your existing radiator tanks are OK and you just want to add a wet cooler as part of a re-core, that should be no problem.

I agree with Vern regarding tranny coolers in the radiator, especially if you plan to tow like I do. My PO had a funky looking small tranny cooler tied to the front of the radiator. I made my own oil and tranny coolers with most of the parts coming from Summit catalog. I listed the parts used.

The hardest part was making the sheet metal brackets I used to hang everything off the frame rails, but I like designing sheet metal stuff and have access to a buddy's brake and shear.
