They measure opacity %, my understanding is it is some sort of optical device they stick in the tailpipe. I couldn't see it from the drivers seat. Mine measured 8%, the pass/fail limit is 40%, lower number means less soot/smoke.
Good news at last! I figured out how to pull the contacts out of the harness plug and swapped the #1/3 wires. Started it up and boy does that thing idle smooth now. I'm feeling pretty good that I got that figured out. To recap, the previous owner took it to an electrical shop when it started to run bad. They replaced the harness plug and mixed up #1 and 3 injector wires so #1 was getting fuel when #3 should and vice versa. This caused a ton of white smoke and the only way to stop the smoke was to disconnect them both. I'm going to get it registered at lunch today, can't wait to drive this thing on 8 cylinders for the first time.
Very good to hear! good diagnostics too! And to think you probably got that truck at pretty good price and all it needed was two wires hook up correctly! Great to hear!
No way could I have figured it out without the help of all you guys here. I'm a cheap DIY guy, no way could I pay someone to work on it for me. That's how the previous owner went broke on this thing. DIY has it's costs too, I probably replaced more than necessary due to limited diagnostic capability. I had fuel in the oil, so injectors and/or fuel pump may have been leaking, I ended up replacing both. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got a good deal. I paid $4250 but had to borrow truck and trailer to get it home. The state tried to charge me tax on more than double that amount for fair market value. Luckily I got a non-operational vehicle stamp on the transfer so they only charged me on what I paid. Took almost 3 months of spare time to get it all straightened out, but I figure it'll be worth about twice what I have into it. Guages, exhaust, and TW chip coming soon to compliment those Stage 1's!
Yee-Haw! I got it registered yesterday and drove it to work today on 8 cylinders for the first time. No smoke and lots more power! Those crossed injector signal lines in the 1/3 harness plug were the cause of the smoke problem. Also switched the MAP boost and vacuum line routing that were also backwards. I almost feel bad for the guy I bought it from, he got fleeced by the mechanics he paid to work on it. Thanks to all that have helped to get me up and running. I really appreciate it.
i guess i should check to make sure there isnt a second page to the post before i type a long write up. good to hear you got if fixed.
gotta love the slow internet out here.
