I've had a cheby and a f 150 that have rusted through. My 01 f250 is really bad. Mostly rust. I'm trying to think of a way to make it leak while still under extended warranty. The dealer will not touch it. I asked if they would clean and coat it cause I know the large chunks ready to fall off are holding back the oil. I have the POR 15 kit but don't want to touch it till warranty is over.
I'm getting ready to do the POR-15 treatment on my oil pan as well, but my pan does not have the really widespread rust that some of yours seem to have- just several nickel - to quarter - size spots. However, you might think about doing a search in this forum on the subject or oil pans and rust.....it has come up many times.
Also, look for a remedy that kwikkordead has used in treating his pan- I think he used a gas tank repair kit? (kwik, correct me if I'm wrong!) That might be a solution for those of you with extensively rusted pans-
Anyway, there's a lot of info on the subject here, you just might have to dig a little.
Wow, wish I had a couple quarter size spots!! My pan is so rusted all over, I am afraid to do any picking at the rust before I apply the rust conversion treatment (I bought some type of kit for like $15 at VIP Auto). It is not leaking but I am waiting until summer is over just in case I need to set aside a weekend to pull the motor..... man, that would suck....
Anyone else have a pan that is as bad as mine? Just curious how much rust you removed before coating.
I had an old nissan sentra several years back, noticed the pan was rusted a bit. Was scraping at it with a screwdriver (not the kind with vodka) and it went right through. Oil went everywhere. Had to float the motor up a couple inches to get the pan swapped out. Me and oil pans have bad luck... Love those salty maine winder roads...
