I was just under cleaning and scraping the pan.Not too bad .A bit of flakeing, about two inches around.WHat i'd like to know is;Is there anything else to use other than the pol-15.Its a bit pricey.Just wondering if some sort of apoxy or j.b.weld would do the same then some engine enamal over that.If not I'll go with the pol-15,definately alot cheaper and easier than pulling the engine just to change a pan. Thanks for your wisdom.
POR-15 is good, although I used a Ford Product made for gas tanks and oils pans. Not sure of the part number, but it seals and coats well.
It's only available at the dealer and it's in a red and white can with a screw top and black lettering.
It can be sprayed or brushed on and dries rock hard. If you can't find any other info on this product, let me know and I can dig up the can and give you the part #.
Either way, get it coated GOOD while it's not leaking.
hey if that stuff works let me know cuz my oil pan is leaking and dont feel like dropping my motor either so if you get it can you possibly give me the part number and let me know how much it is thanks
Yes,I will absolutely get the part #.But my pan isnt leaking yet.If yours is leaking I'm not sure what the fix would be other than a new pan.Maybe like I said earlier some sort of j.b. weld, dunno. But i'll get the part # anyway.
I used Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer, says you don't have to sand but I did, then apply and it drys to a black finish, after a couple days I painted and it looks like its sealed up good.
I just went on the por-15 website and it wasnt as much as I had first thought.I was looking at the trunk repair or something like that for $130.I see the qaurt of this stuff is $38.When you use this,do you do the whole pan or just the effected areas? Is a quart enough to do a full oil pan.And one last question do I need to apply any pre-coat stuff or just scrape the loose stuff and clean?

I would try to paint the whole pan, or what ever you can get at. One quart is more than enough. Just follow the directions on the can, basically wire brush the loose stuff and clean it up real good. Good luck.
... and if it is anything like the loctite stuff, don't use it straight from the container. Instead, pour a bit into a separate container and use what you need and throw away the rest from the second container (so you only want to put in a bit at a time).
The reason for this is the rust causes a chemical reaction, which results in the hardened material. If you paint it on directly from the quart container you risk allowing the rust particles to migrate into the container. The result will be that the stuff that you do not end up using will also harden and be useless to you.

Reason: clarity
I've been looking for something other than POR-15 too. Their website says its not UV safe, so you need to top coat it if it will get hit with the sun.
The oil pan doesn't get hit by the sun (unless you are real unlucky!) but I want to use whatever I get on my RV frame/tongue to clean up some rust spots.
I've been looking at Rust Bullet, but can't find it locally either.
It looks like you need to etch the POR-15 with some junk to top coat it?
WHen I was under my truck last weekend doing my guages, I saw two large rust spots that were starting to bubble. I was wondering what to do about it, as I heard you had to pull the engine in order to change the pain and wasn't looking forward to that procedure. I will have to try that POR 15 before it starts to leak. How come, if this is such a widespread issue, Ford hasn't done a recall?

Recall? Yeah right, this is actually a common problem with many brands. I have had a few work trucks over the years that had to get new oil pans because of rust. I learned my lesson and keep a close eye on them before they get too bad now.
I have never seen a rust problem on an oil pan before and this is the 5th truck I have owned and that doesn't include my expedition, although I haven't gotten under it to look at the pan...hmmm.
