2004 brakes

I just went to change the front rotors and pads on my truck. When i removed the spindle nut it said do not re-use. What is the deal with that? Is it really something that i need to be concerned about?

I just had my brakes done today. So, if they did use a new spindle nut, on the repair bill, they didn't charge me for it. What are the odds of that no charge?

Yep, I don't think you need to take the spindle nut off (or even mess with it at all) to do brake work. Unbolt the caliper from the back and once it is out of the way, the disk should slide off the wheel studs.

Regardless of why you removed the nut, I'm betting they tell you to not reuse the nut due to threadlocking.

I haven't looked at that nut to see whether it just uses threadlocking compound or has a sheetmetal tang to retain it. Either way, they're probably being cautious and advising to use a new nut that would have fresh, QC'd threadlocking.

^for those who don't know, the spindle nut is removed on the 4x2 trucks in order to take off the front rotors...us 4x4 owners don't have to deal with that.

I think it was Dec 2004 build date when Ford went from a seperat rotor/hub assembly, to a single piece rotor hub assembly.

Here is a thread w/ some info that should help....

Was there any indication of threadlocker or a red rust colored residue (not actual rust)? If so, you should be fine just using Red Loctite Threadlocker (PN- 271) and re-using the nut. Even if you decide to get a new nut, you must secure it with loctite.

Matt,
Not so sure about the thread locker. I don't remember seeing any and it seems like I remember that being a fiber nut. Either way, I didn't use any thread lock (Loc-Tite) and after 50,000+ miles, it's doing fine.
I still have the old nuts somewhere in the garage. I'll see if I can find them and look for any leftover Loc-Tite.

edit to add: Found 'em. Looked close and saw no signs of any left over thread lock compund. It is a fiber nut. Approx 2-3 rounds of thread held by the portion of the nut that is not metal (Nylon or some such material?)
