MILD SHUTTER when towing ..

Hey all!
As some of you know I have a 2004, F-350 CC DRW Lariat 4x4 with the FX4 off road package with 31K miles. Truck pulls 85% of the time when I use it. It has 4.10 gears with limited slip diff. I notice when I pull a heavy load, in excess of 10K pounds, I get a shutter on take off but goes away well before 20MPH. I do believe this is normal cause partly due to the long drive shaft and also partly due to how the 6.0 is designed. Trans runs cool.. Pulling between 170 to 180 degerees unless its REALLY hot out then it might go to 190, but not for long.. When truck is empty of pulling a light load, then no shutter. Am I correct that this is normal? I asked the dealer a while ago and they said its normal. I had a 2001 F-350 SRW Lariat with 3.73 gears and a 7.3 PSD and it did shutte some as well with a heavy trailer. The shutter is more annoying than anything.

I don't think it is normal. What I think is happening is the LS rear end is causing the shudder.

I would change the fluid in your rear differential either with fresh fluid and the friction modifier or with a good quality synthetic fluid that doesn't require the friction modifier, see if that doesn't eliminate the shudders.

Sounds like the driveline angle is wrong, and the center carrier braket may need to be shimmed to correct this. There is a TSB on this and you will need to take your trailer with you to the dealer so they can properly diagnose and get the correct angle on the driveline as the angle needs to be corrected for the load.

Here is the newest TSB and supersedes the one "ozx3+1" posted.

Hope this helps

Thank you Blackhat.. Kinda figured a possible driver shaft angle since the drive shaft is so long. I will try shimming since I have my own lift... Easier than bringing it to the dealer!!!!...

I don't think there were any big changes to the newer TSB just added 2007 models and changed the "warranty coding number" for the dealer to get paid.

I had the same problem when I tow my 19,000 lb fiver with 4,000 lbs pin weight in the bed. I put a set of Firestone Ride-Rite airbags on it to raise the back end and the shudder went away completely. The load of the pin weight is squashing the back end down to the point that the drive-line angle is changed so that it is out of specs.

I am thinking this is a carrier bearing shim problem as well. However, I don't think he should mess with removing any shims. If he does he will most likely end up with the same shutter when taking off unloaded. His best bet is probably airbags like glsurratt suggested. This will bring the driveline back closer to the correct angle when loaded, and won't affect the unloaded driveline angle. Also, if he is towing 85% of the time like he mentioned he will probably appreciate the way the truck handles with the bags added.
